Lighting Only or Whole Bathroom Makeover?
The first thing to decide is what is the scope of your bathroom update? Are you looking only to swap out your light fixtures for new nautical vanity lights, or are you looking to update the whole look of the bathroom? If you’re only focusing on lights you will have fewer elements to tie together so the task will be a bit simpler. However if you’re planning a bathroom makeover, a bit of planning at the beginning can make the difference between a mish-mash of somewhat related items and a completely coordinated bathroom with a coastal décor.
Decide in advance on your color scheme, the types of materials you want to use and whether you want an elegant or whimsical look – making these decisions in advance will help you weed through all if the options and end up with a unified look.
Here are a few nautical decor ideas for the bathroom to get you started:
- Lighting options – There are host of indoor nautical lighting fixtures that are perfect for use in the bathroom. Evaluate your current fixtures and take a few measurements. Ceiling mounted lights are common in bathrooms, as are vanity lights. You can also incorporate free-standing candle or oil burning nautical lanterns for an unusual focal point. Nautical lights with light sensors or manual on-off switches make great night lights.
- Wall and counter accessories – A glass vase filled with sand, shells and small bits of drift wood makes a nice arrangement on the counter. For a classic look, consider reproduction artwork by Turner. Black and white family photos taken at the beach in a nautical silver frames can personalize this space in a striking way.
- Bath accessories – Nautical, sea or beach themed shower curtains as well as bath mats are fairly easy to find. You can also consider star and shell shaped soap and matching towels.
- Bathroom mirror – To add an artistic, coastal touch to your medicine cabinet or mirror use a hot glue gun to decorate it with driftwood or shells collected from the beach.
- Bathtub or shower – Redesign your shower with coastal or nautical-themed tiles or tiles in a color that matches the theme you are creating. If you have a claw foot bathtub consider hand painting it with a whimsical design.
- Shower curtain – Reuse a Dacron sail for your shower curtain. These sails are waterproof and durable yet soft.

Don’t expect to find everything you need all at once. Remaking a bathroom can be a process that takes several months. Look at nautical themed bathroom pictures and create a mental picture of what you’d like your bathroom to look like, then slowly set out to change a little bit here and there until it matches the picture in your head. Sometimes making it a work in progress instead of rushing the job so it is done will provide you the time to find everything you want to create just the look you want.
